About 72 fatal crane accidents happen each year. It’s no secret that working with big machinery can be dangerous. That’s why safety is always a priority. Preventive lifting equipment methods should be taken to ensure safety while using an overhead. Here’s an overhead crane maintenance checklist to follow. What The Checklist Includes An overhead crane maintenance checklist includes three different checkouts: 1. Area Check This check is to ensure the area around the crane is clear. Some of these activities include: Know the location of the crane disconnect switch. Make sure there are no warning signs present Check to make sure workers are not working near the area Look ahead to verify there is nothing around the area where the load will be moved. Check to make sure the below-the-hook devices are designed for the crane in use and will safely be able to lift the load. Make sure that the load capacity is equal to or less than the capacity of the crane. 2. Preliminary Check Once the area check has been performed, the operator can begin the preliminary check of the equipment. This should be done before he or she touches any controls. Check the electric systems, bridge, runway, trolley, and hoist to make sure there are no loose, broken, or damaged parts. Make sure the wire rope is seated in the drums grooves properly. Ensure that the open power source is secure and there is nothing close. Check the strain reliefs or brushings to make sure that no wires are pulled. Make sure there is no damage to the pushbutton pendant. 3. Equipment Safety Check After the preliminary check is complete, the crane operator must perform a safety check of the crane itself to make sure it is in working order. This is to ensure there is no potential for malfunction. Several different categories need to be signed off when checking the equipment. Check all powered systems. Including, making sure the power button is not sticky, the hoist hook rises, and the upper limit switch is functioning properly. Make sure all hooks are in working condition. There should be no more than 10% wear on any part of the hook. Ensure there is no damage or cracks on the bottom block assembly. The sheaves should be able to rotate freely and smoothly. Make sure there are no broken wires on the wire rope and load chain. There should be no kinks, cuts, or thermal damage to any ropes or chains. Overhead Crane And Hoist Safety And Maintenance Checklist SAFETY INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS Overhead crane and hoists inspections are mandated by both OSHA and ANSI with the various requirements outlined in Federal OSHA 1910.179 regulations as well as various ANSI B30 standards. The types of inspections required in OSHA and ANSI are fairly consistent within the regulation and standards books and include: initial inspection, periodic inspection, frequent inspection, and daily/shift. “Initial” Inspections: includes a load test of up to 125% of rated capacity and thorough hands-on inspection and operational check of the crane or hoist equipment. The Initial Inspection must be performed when the equipment is installed and whenever repairs are made to critical load-bearing components. The Initial documentation must be maintained for the life of the equipment along with the repair history. “Periodic” Inspections: include an operational check and thorough hands-on inspection of the crane or hoist equipment. The Periodic Inspection must be performed as frequent as monthly on equipment that has usage that would create the potential for frequent repair and safety issues to as little as annually on seldom-used equipment that has little to no potential for repair and safety issues. The majority of equipment will require quarterly to monthly periodic inspections due to manufacturer requirements and frequency of found defects. Periodic documentation must be also be maintained for the life of the equipment. “Frequent” Inspections: Include an operation check as well as a visual inspection of critical items listed in the codes and standards such as limit switches, wire rope, chain, hooks, etc. Frequent inspections are required at least monthly and generally done in months when the periodic inspections will not be performed.

Overhead crane load testing As for the load testing of overhead cranes, it should be bear in mind that the test loads shall not be more than the 125 % of the rated lifting capacity. And also all the load testing reports should be filed which can be accessed by the personnel who is in charge. Pre-test procedures of overhead crane load testing Check the overhead crane operator’s manual for the dos and don’ts, and the operational limitations. Make sure the lifting gear to be used with the overhead crane in normal duties. Make sure all lifting attachments are marketed with rating load visually. Check the previous and periodic test and inspection notes, deficiency reports to make sure all the necessary corrections and repairs have been made. Make sure all the safe working load of the overhead crane is clearly marked on the crane or on the tag on it. Make sure the crane runway and runway structure were designed to support the cranes and loads in all authorized operation configurations. Proper loads for the testing should be selected. A 25% rated load for minimum partial load testing, rated load testing, and a proof load around but not exceeding 125% of the rated load shall be used. Check the overhead crane manufacturer’s instructions and limitation on load testing. The reeving configuration have to be bear in mind. Proper ringing should be used for the load testing which must conforms to good rigging practice for lifting safety. Safety measures should be used to prevent personnel or vehicles to intrude into the overhead crane operating region. All the persons related to the overhead crane load testing including the overhead crane operator, the riggers and the hand signal man have to know the load testing procedures and how the overhead crane load testing conducted. Inspect the overhead crane thoroughly, especially to the structural elements of the overhead cranes where the will be subjected to stress during the overhead crane load testing. A visual inspection to the crane runway, track, powder conductors, collectors and switch gear should be conducted before the load testing. Overhead crane Load testing The overhead crane should be positioned on a stanchion or column of the runway with the trolley or electric hoist placed adjacent to the end of truck at the beginning of the overhead crane load testing to measure the deflection of the crane main girders and the runway girders at center span. Lift the rated load up to a sufficient height to make sure each and every tooth of the lifting gear train is subjected to the rated load. Lower the load to a height of 4 to 8 inches above the ground. Measure the deflection. Traverse the bridge to mid span of the runway girder and measure the deflection. Traverse the trolley with rated load to mid span of the bridge and measure the deflection. Comparing the date you get with the specifications given by the overhead crane manufacturer. With the holding brake in the released positon, start the load down slowly and then return the controller to the off position as the test load is lowering. The load controlling device should prevent the load from accelerating. For overhead cranes with primary and secondary holding brakes and/ or eddy current or hoist eddy current or hoist dynamic load brakes visually observe that correct operation ensures control of the rated load. For overhead cranes equipped with a hoist dynamic brake, eddy current brake, or regenerative brake, check lowering speeds against manufacturer’s specifications to ensure correct brake operation. To ensure the safety of electric hoist unit in case of power failure during material handling operation of the overhead crane and electric hoist, lift the rated load to a convenient distance above the ground. Lower the load at high speed and, with the controller in the lowering position, disconnect the main power source and the load tested should stop lowering. Test the overhead crane with 125% of rated load to achiever the proof load. Repeat items 2-1 through 2-7 and determine that during these operations all crane functions operate effectively. The overhead crane should be operated at appropriate seeds to ensure the safety and the control of the load while handling the proof load. Separate tests should be conducted for overhead cranes with double trolleys or hoists or more. Operate the trolley or electric hoist with the proof load suspended from the hook trough the maximum operational range on the bridge. Observe that the trolley brakes are operating properly if appropriate and allow for load swing and coasting. Operate the bridge with the proof load suspended from the hook as near as possible to the runway rail on each side through the maximum operational rang on the runway system to observe for any binding of bridge trucks and proper brake operation etc. Test the brakes of bridge and trolley separately to make sure they can effectively stop in a distanced equal to 10 % of full load speed in feet per minute when traveling at full speed with full rated load. The overhead crane runway with two or more cranes should be tested with all overhead cranes loaded with full capacity at same time. The crane runway deflection should be measured with the loads suspended as close as possible to the runway with the overhead cranes moving across the span between runway supports and compare the data to appropriate specifications. Post overhead crane load testing A thorough examination is needed to make sure the overhead crane has went through the tests satisfactorily. Park the crane at the proper location for the convenience of use and relax all rigging and reeving to allow for inspection of the wire rope and reeving components. Disconnect power and install a safety lock-out device before mounting the overhead crane. Examine the overhead crane runway for structural damage or distortion, loose or damage fasteners, track alignment and secure attachment to the structural support. Check the Electrical components of the overhead crane runway for deterioration and proper condition. Make sure the electric codes, wires, connections and enclosures in neatness, security. Check and make sure all the sheaves, drums and wire rope from damage or excessive wear. Pay attention to the end fittings and anchor points for potential damage. Check and make sure all the necessary guards and crane safety measures are installed. Make sure all shafts, couplings, an open gears that can be contacted by persons are properly guarded. Make sure all the damages, deficiencies or corrections are marked accordingly. Hoist the load blocks clear of personnel or obstructions. Make sure the wire rope is wound properly on the hoist drums. Open the main disconnect and leave the pendant, if any, in the designated location. Fill in the report form and conduct an exit briefing if appropriate.

Ⅲ. The basic safety requirements in the process of overhead crane installation

Ⅳ. The overhead crane installation process
1. Crane rail installation
⑴ Firstly clean up the site, cement beam foundation under rail of overhead crane for acceptance.
⑵ Level-up, setting out.
⑶ Check and straighten\of overhead crane rail, rail top, rail joint connection, looking for positive reinforcement and measurement inspection, leveling, straightening.
⑷ Overhead crane stoper making installation
The installation of the crane rail standards to qualify for TJ231-78 "mechanical equipment installation engineering construction acceptance specifications" the provisions of the standard, the whole overhead crane traveling is not more than 10 mm, the difference between the highest and lowest joint of the left, right, offset, on the face are not greater than 1 mm, joint clearance is not greater than 2 mm, span deviation should not be greater than 5 mm, with cross two parallel track elevation relative difference, in the post should not be greater than 10 mm, other place should not be greater than 15 mm.

3. Bridge installation of overhead crane

4. Electrical installation
Before overhead crane installation should be familiar with electrical schematic diagram, wiring diagram in detail, electrical assembly drawing and related technical data, understand the operating principles and the function of the various components. In order to accurately and quickly processing installation problems appeared in the process. Check all electrical components and motor of geopolitical resistance shall be not less than 0.8 ohms. Should not be less than 0.4 ohms in the damp environment, check each line is correct, after sure no ber, before the current test run. In the test run, check whether the direction is consistent, travel switch power is in accordance with the requirements of direction, up and down limit device is safe and reliable. The safe and reliable safety device must be qualified before lifting construction, in the process of hoisting, strictly abide by rules of safe operation, it is forbidden to illegal operations.
Ⅴ. Overhead crane charged by shell, wire and tube should be reliable grounding, crane rails and any point on overhead crane, the grounding resistance less than 4 ohm. Repeat grounding resistance is not more than 10 ohms. The main circuit and control circuit of insulation resistance is not less than 0.8 ohms.
Ⅵ. Overhead crane test run after qualified, will be no load test, static load test and dynamic load test. Qualified self-checking, fill in the completion of the report, notify party a, organize relevant departments to check and accept, qualified after consign is used.
